BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University football team defeated Alfred State College 63-0 in an Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) game on Saturday afternoon. The win secured the Eagles' second straight ECFC Championship and third in the last four years.
The Eagles will receive the conference's automatic-bid to the NCAA Division III Football Championship. The bracket will be set on Sunday, November 12 during the NCAA Selection Show with first round games scheduled for Saturday, November 18.
Husson amassed 56 points in the first half alone against the Pioneers. The 28 points the Eagles' scored in the first quarter, breaks the program's single-game record for most points scored in the first quarter (26, Anna Maria, 2015) and the 56 total points scored in the first half, breaks the program's single-game records for most points scored in the first half (42, Mount Ida, 2005) and in a single half (42, Mount Ida, 2005).
Senior running back John Smith (Fayetville, Ga.) carried the ball 15 times for 144 yards (9.5 yards per carry) with three rushing touchdowns giving him 23 on the season, breaking his single-season record of 20, which he set in 2015.
The Eagles defense was also relentless, surrendering just 85 yards of total offense (55 pass, 30 rush) to the visitors. The unit was particularly tough on third down, allowing the Pioneers to convert on just three of their 12 attempts (25%), while forcing three turnovers.
One of those turnovers was an interception return for a touchdown for none other than senior defensive lineman Luke Washburn (Litchfield, Maine). The interception and touchdown were each career firsts for the senior captain.
The ECFC ends its regular season on Saturday with Husson playing host to Mount Ida College. The team will be awarded the ECFC Championship trophy following the game.
