Goldstein named Gallaudet's 36th head football coach, Davis elevated to assistant head coach
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The interim tag was removed from Chuck
Goldstein's title on Thursday as he takes over as the 36th head
football coach at Gallaudet University as announced by Athletics
Director Michael Weinstock. Goldstein moved from offensive
coordinator to interim head coach when former head coach Ed Hottle
left GU for Stevenson University on November 18. Weinstock also
announced Defensive Coordinator John Davis has been promoted to
assistant head coach.
"I have full confidence in Chuck and John's abilities here at
Gallaudet University," said Weinstock. "The two are hard workers
who are dedicated to the University, the athletics department and
most importantly our student-athletes. We are excited for this new
chapter of GU football to be written."
This was Goldstein's first season with the Bison as Gallaudet
finished second in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference and
posted a 6-4 record. The winning mark against a complete varsity
schedule is the first since 1930. Goldstein helped to implement a
new offensive scheme this season as GU ran the triple-option
attack. Gallaudet finished the year ranked No. 9 in the nation in
rushing as the Buff and Blue averaged 290.8 yards per game among
NCAA Division III schools. Goldstein also adds the title of NCAA
Compliance Officer to his title as he overtakes that position at
Kendall Green and relinquishes the strength and conditioning
duties.
"This is truly an honor to be named Gallaudet University's 36th
head football coach," said Goldstein. "I look forward on continuing
the traditions that have been established in the program's 116-year
history."
Goldstein arrived at Gallaudet from North Point High School in
Waldorf, Md., where he was the Physical Education Department Chair
for four years. At North Point, he was the strength and
conditioning coach, weight training teacher and offensive
coordinator for the football team. Goldstein designed a weight
training curriculum for the Charles County Board of Education. He
also served two different stints as an assistant college football
coach at Salisbury University (2002-04) and Averett University
(2001). The Germantown, Md., native is a proud graduate from
Salisbury University (Class of 2001) where he majored in exercise
science and physical education.
"I feel confident that the coaching staff and myself can build of
the solid foundation that has been established here over the last
few years," said Goldstein. "I have made it clear to the players
and staff that we are going to work hard this offseason to achieve
our No. 1 goal of winning a conference championship next year."
Davis completed his first season as Gallaudet's defensive
coordinator where the Bison finished the season ranked No. 6 in the
nation for total defense as the Bison only allowed 245.30 yards per
game. Gallaudet's pass defense was ranked No. 4 among NCAA Division
III teams as the Buff and Blue limited opponents to 109.10 yards
per game. The Gallaudet defense was also nationally ranked for pass
efficiency defense (No. 29) and scoring defense (No. 30).
"Our program is moving in the right direction. Coach Goldstein has
entrusted in me these new duties which I am excited to begin and
fulfill to the best of my abilities," said Davis. "I am not sure if
there is a better fit than for Coach Goldstein to run this football
program. He has shown that he is an asset to this program. We will
not miss a beat as we head into the 2010 season."
Davis served as Gallaudet's secondary coach in 2008. He is also
Gallaudet's assistant head coach for the men's and women's track
and field program. The Lynchburg, Va., native is a proud graduate
from Liberty University where he lettered in football. The
scholarship player completed three seasons with the Flames. Davis
played high school football at E.C. Glass High School under the
tutelage of Coach Wayne Lance, who currently coaches at Atlantic
Shores High School in Virginia Beach, Va. At E.C. Glass, Davis was
named a prep-star All-American and earned All-Region and
All-District honors as a defensive back.
